Esquire has a glowing writeup of the simple Ivy League mainstay, a predecessor of the Cosmopolitan:

A thorough (the boss is reading this) rummage among the various drink books in our archives here at the Institute turns up Trader Vic's 1972 Bartender's Guide, Revised, which lists not one but two Cape Codders -- with and without soda. That's the earliest reference we can find. So, then, a late Nixon-era drink, from who knows where -- we can't see the Trader, who was running a global Tiki empire by then, hanging out in New England college bars (us, though...well, we were underage -- not that that stopped us from trying).
