Suffering Bastard

A fancier take on a whiskey ginger. (Hangover not required for enjoyment, despite the name.)


  • Served in old fashioned
  • 13% ABV
  • Garnish with Orange slice




Ginger ale 12.0cl 4.0oz
Whiskey 3.0cl 1.0oz
Gin 3.0cl 1.0oz
Lime juice 3.0cl 1.0oz
Angostura bitters One dash
Use ounces
Use centiliters


  1. Pour ingredients into an ice-filled Old Fashioned glass and top with ginger ale.
  2. Add more ice if needed.


The drink's genesis can be traced to the Long Bar at the Shepheard Hotel in Cairo. As the story goes, in the late 1940s, the Shepheard's bar steward was Joe Scialom. One day in 1947, according to Esquire, Scialom was desperate for a hangover remedy and the Suffering Bar Steward (soon somewhat sloppily rechristened as the Suffering Bastard) was the result.
